If acne has settled but the marks or uneven texture remain, it can be hard to know what to book. Microneedling for acne scars is one option worth discussing, but a consultation comes first. The type of scarring, whether acne is still active and your skin's history all influence the advice. You do not need to identify your scar type before coming in.

At FutureSkin in Rosebery, we offer SkinPen microneedling. Our complimentary 45-minute consultation with a dermal therapist gives you time to explain what you notice and ask about options. We can discuss whether further medical assessment is needed before a treatment plan. This guide helps you prepare for that conversation, including questions about sessions, recovery and cost.

What microneedling does

Microneedling uses small needles to create controlled punctures in the skin, prompting a healing response and collagen production. It may improve the appearance of selected acne scars, but it does not erase every scar. SkinPen is mechanical microneedling; it should not be confused with radiofrequency microneedling, which also delivers heat.

The American Academy of Dermatology describes improvement as gradual, with some changes taking months to assess. Its general guidance discusses a series of sessions, rather than promising a particular result from one visit. Temporary redness or darkening, discomfort and swelling can occur. Read the AAD's microneedling overview. Your clinician's device-specific plan and aftercare instructions take priority over a general guide.

First, be clear about what you want assessed

People use “acne scars” to describe several things. Tell us whether your concern is an indentation, a change in surface texture, a red mark, a dark mark, or several of these. You can point to the areas you would like us to examine. A written list can help if you have been researching lots of treatments and feel unsure where to start.

Also explain whether new breakouts are still appearing and what you currently do to manage them. Bring the names of prescribed medicines and skincare, and mention previous scar treatments. We need the whole picture, including products or procedures from another clinic. The first recommendation may be to address an active condition before considering a cosmetic treatment.

A useful consultation question is: “Which part of what I am seeing could this treatment reasonably help?” That invites a more specific answer than “Will it work?” Ask what may remain unchanged, whether another approach deserves consideration and how you would judge progress together.

How many sessions might you need?

There is no honest single number for everybody searching this question. A plan should explain why a series is proposed, how appointments would be spaced and when the skin would be reviewed before continuing. You should also know what would lead the practitioner to adjust or stop that plan.

Instead of purchasing a course based only on a headline number, ask for an initial recommendation and a review point. Clarify whether the quoted price is for one appointment or a package. Ask whether the same areas would be treated each time and whether anything optional has been included in the estimate.

It can help to agree on a consistent way of reviewing your skin. Ask whether clinical photographs will be used privately for assessment, how they will be stored and whether separate consent would be sought for any other use. A treatment appointment should not depend on agreeing to promotional photographs.

Understand recovery before choosing a date

The FDA identifies potential microneedling risks including bleeding, bruising, redness, peeling, pigment changes and infection. It recommends discussing medical history and following the provider's aftercare. It also distinguishes device authorisation from the safety and effectiveness of combining a device with other products. See the FDA's information on microneedling devices; US regulatory information is not an Australian approval statement.

For your own appointment, ask what recovery is expected at the proposed settings and which effects should prompt a call. Discuss work, exercise, outdoor activities and important events so timing is realistic. Do not assume that someone else's next-day photo predicts how your skin will look or feel.

Before leaving, make sure you know when to cleanse, which products are permitted, when makeup and sunscreen can be applied, and when to restart any active skincare. Those timings should come from your treatment provider. Keep the instructions where you can find them and contact the clinic if something is unclear.

SkinPen pricing at FutureSkin

SkinPen face and neck treatment starts from $550 per session. An optional booster or exosome add-on is $300, and a Healite II LED add-on starts from $60. An add-on is not automatically necessary. Ask what is proposed, why it is being considered, and what evidence and risks are relevant before deciding.

Prices are a guide. After your complimentary consultation we'll confirm a plan and total cost. Ask us about pricing for plans of three or more treatments. Your budget matters, and you can take time to consider a recommendation before booking.
